All-malt Barley wine
L'Ensemble di Montalcino
During a beer festival in Italy near Montalcino, we met an elegant lady and gentleman who were charmed by our beer. However, they were more at home in the wine business. We did not decline an invitation to visit their "Cantina" (the place where the wine is made). The next day, following the address given, we came to a long driveway to the castle with gatekeeper and all. The woman, an ex-American actress, had a passion for making wine and farming her own vineyard. After a tour of the estate, helping with the harvest, and a visit to the Cantina, it turned out we had ended up with the owners of Ferrero Rocher & Nutella. They told us that they only produce the wine themselves in good harvest years. In other years the grapes went to a cooperative.
Apparently it was not a great vintage, because I soon discovered quite a few empty wooden barrels. Opportunism is sometimes a good thing, and after some back and forth bargaining, we were able to buy the empty barrels, with the promise that we would age a beer of ours on them and they would tap the first glasses at the beer festival in Tuscany the following year.
"Our gems in beer."
So it happened; in the presence of beer lovers, wine lovers, and a host of wine producers, it soon became clear that a potentially unique beer, one that could belong to both beer and wine lovers, was seeing the light of day for the first time. The L'ensemble die Montalcino 13 vol% was born.
For years, the presence of other wine products, as well as their enthusiasm for beer, has ensured a guaranteed supply of the best quality Brunello di Montalcino barrels.
